STATEMENT
Jay Lohmann is a many faceted artist, with both studio’s in  New York, and Milan.

“I find that by rearranging images, printed material and painted graffiti, I can  externally manifest and manipulate the internal film that goes on in my mind. The work transmutes and reconfigures street imagery and found printed material, in order to extract from them the life contained within. The tone of these multi-layers of collage, graffiti and more collage are dictated by a single, large, imposing image.   There is something very plastic and manual about the making of these paintings, which satisfies my need for both the visual and tactile. These two impulses come together and form my work.  I like that visually there is always another story, an image manipulated and then placed in a different context becomes something very different all together. Frequently reworking the surfaces, a proliferation of overlapping shapes and figures alters the reality and creates an alternative wholeness. By repurposing these found materials and manipulating them on canvas,  I am able to alter my sense of perception and reality, and ultimately express an intimate internal part of myself to the external world.”
